San Diego based Chumby Industries has announced that it secured 12.5M in Series B financing. CEO, Stephen Tomlin, states that the new financing will be used to “accelerate growth of the company, and expand and broaden the Chumby Network to other screen-based Internet connected devices such as LCD TVs and digital photo frames.”
In case you didn’t know, a Chumby is a $180 touchscreen Wi-Fi device that displays widgets. Using a Chumby is incredibly simple. All you have to do is plug it in, connect it to your Wi-Fi network and log on to the Chumby Network to choose and customize your widgets. The widgets range from RSS feeds, games, videos, tweets, web clips, news, weather, time, photos, and many more. Of course, I recommend pointing your Chumby to the .
The Chumby Network is a rapidly expanding open pipeline of user created and commercial widget applications from high-profile media partners. It enables widgets to be created or updated by any user, developer, media company or content creator to enhance and improve the Chumby experience.
If 2007 was the year of the widget, perhaps 2008 will be the year of the widget devices.
